Son of Victor Emmanuel II and Maria Adelaide of Habsburg-Lorraine, he ascended the throne of Italy in 1878. In 1868 he married Margherita of Savoy. He was assassinated in 1900 in Monza, an event that deeply marked the Italian monarchy.
