Son of Francis Stephen of Lorraine and Maria Theresa of Austria, he became Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1765. In 1764 he married Maria Luisa of Bourbon. He implemented far-reaching Enlightenment reforms, including the abolition of the death penalty.
