Daughter of Pedro Álvarez de Toledo, Viceroy of Naples, in 1539 she married Cosimo I de’ Medici, becoming Duchess of Florence and later Grand Duchess of Tuscany. A central figure at the Medici court, she died in 1562 during a malaria epidemic.
