Son of Giovanni delle Bande Nere and Maria Salviati, he became Duke of Florence in 1537 and the first Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1569. In 1539 he married Eleonora Álvarez de Toledo. He consolidated Medici power by creating a centralized and stable Tuscan state.
