Son of Cosimo I de’ Medici and Eleonora Álvarez de Toledo, he succeeded his brother as Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1587. In 1589 he married Christina of Lorraine. His rule strengthened the economy and the international prestige of the Grand Duchy.
